MICROFINANCE EVENT: 15th International Conference on Inclusive Insurance; “Coping with Climate Risk;” November 5-7, 2019; Dhaka, Bangladesh

This conference offers the opportunity to share information on how to accelerate the outreach of microinsurance services to foster economic development in developing markets. Despite the acquisition of insurance by increasing numbers of low-income individuals in developing economies, there are still a range of gaps in insurance schemes, such as the need to improve protections against climate risks. Conference sessions will include, for example, discussions of how to increase the outreach and quality of insurance specific to women, farmers, and small and medium-sized enterprises. The Munich Re Foundation has organized this conference annually in conjunction with the Microinsurance Network since 2005.

Background on Organizer(s): The Munich Re Foundation is the charitable affiliate of the Munich Reinsurance Group, a Germany-based reinsurer. According to its 2018 corporate responsibility report, the group manages EUR 217 billion (USD 253 billion) worth of assets. The 100-member Microinsurance Network, which is based in Luxembourg, connects insurers and other stakeholders seeking to improve insurance coverage for people with low incomes. The 72-member Bangladesh Insurance Association (BIA) aims “to advocate for an optimistic legislative and regulatory environment, to augment business and professional skills, and to uphold the ethical conduct of [its] members.”

Cost: The cost to attend the conference is USD 790 for participants who register by the end of October and USD 990 thereafter. The cost for participants representing NGOs generally is discounted by USD 300, but larger discounts are offered to such staff from selected developing countries.
