This event will address causes and potential solutions to the exposure that poor and other vulnerable people face to climate change and natural disasters. This includes the potential roles of insurers and policymakers in eliminating the protection gap as well as improving individuals’ resilience in general. The forum will take place in advance of el Seminario Regional para Supervisores de Seguros de Latinoamérica, which will take place from May 8 to May 10. The seminar starting on May 8 is organized by the Switzerland-based Financial Stability Institute (FSI); the Chile-based Association of Insurance Supervisors of Latin America, which is also known by its Spanish acronym ASSAL; and the Switzerland-based International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS).
Background on Organizers: The forum on May 7 is organized by IAIS, the Germany-based Access to Insurance Initiative (A2ii) and the Luxembourg-based Microinsurance Network. The members of IAIS comprise insurance regulators and supervisors in about 140 countries. A2ii is a Germany-based partnership of development organizations that aims to decrease vulnerability by supporting insurance supervisors. The 100-member Microinsurance Network connects insurers and other stakeholders that seek to improve insurance coverage for people with low incomes.
The event will be hosted by the Superintendencia de Seguros y Reaseguros de Panamá (SSRP), the insurance regulator of Panama, with the support of ASSAL. ASSAL is an NGO representing insurance supervisors in 20 countries Latin America. Portugal and Spain act as associate members of the institution.
