Summary of Event: This one-day seminar will address developments in the global microinsurance sector and feature content presented at the 6th International Microinsurance Conference in Manila, Philippines, in November 2010. The seminar is primarily targeted at insurance and development experts, but also academics and policy makers who were unable to attend the conference in Manila.

About the Organizers: The Actuarial Profession represents the members of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, the chartered professional body for actuaries in the United Kingdom.

The Munich Re Foundation was established in 2005 by Munich Re, a German reinsurance company with assets of USD 313 billion as of December 31, 2010. Munich Re Foundation seeks risk-reducing solutions in the context of international development and globalization, concentrating specifically on water-related issues.

Microinsurance Network is a member-based network of donor organizations, multilateral agencies, insurance providers, policymakers and academics. It provides a platform for information sharing and stakeholder coordination with the aim of promoting the development of insurance products for low-income persons.

Sessions include:
– Introduction to microinsurance – opportunities and barriers
– How to insure the poor? Evidence from academic research
– Actuaries and the future of microinsurance: What can and can’t they do?
– Roundtable discussion: Is there a profit serving the poor?
