MICROFINANCE EVENT: Responsible Finance Forum; July 5-7, 3023; Bengaluru, India

Themed “Shaping a Responsible Digital Finance Ecosystem,” the upcoming edition of this event – the first in-person since 2019 – will focus on client protection to help “low-income and vulnerable” people reduce risks as they use financial tools. Although the detailed agenda has not yet been finalized, it is expected to include topics such as: (1) Balancing Responsible Finance Between Markets, State and Society; (2) Addressing the Issue of Eroding Consumer Trust; (3) Taking a Gender-intentional Approach to Responsible Finance; (4) Looking Past the Probability Storm – Risks of Cyber Security in a Quantum Age; and (5) Responsible Finance at the Intersection of Climate and Consumer Protection.

Background on Organizer: Founded in 2008 by the US-based NGO Accion, the Center for Financial Inclusion (CFI) works with microfinance practitioners, regulators, banks, investors and academics in an effort to increase financial inclusion and promote client protection by connecting the microfinance community to capital markets, technology and advisory services. During 2021, Accion expended USD 4.7 million to support the center.

Founded in 1961, Accion seeks to alleviate poverty by offering services such as microenterprise loans and business training. The organization has 200 partner institutions in 63 countries in Africa, the Americas and Asia. As of 2021, Accion reports total assets of USD 528 million. The investment subsidiaries of Accion include Accion Venture Lab, Accion Global Investments and Accion Frontier Investments.
