The Center for Financial Inclusion (CFI), an initiative of US-based NGO Accion, is planning to hold the sixth iteration of its Financial Inclusion Week (FIW), an annual event aimed at promoting financial inclusion, from October 13 to October 16. FIW 2020 will focus on four of CFI’s priorities: (1) Consumer Protection; (2) Data Opportunities and Risks for Financial Inclusion; (3) Women’s Financial Inclusion; and (4) Financial Services for Mitigating and Adapting to Climate Risk. The event is aligned with the initiative’s recent moves “to position our strategy where inclusive finance can have an important role on issues that are most pressing for the lives of the poor.” While the detailed schedule for 2020 has not been released, FIW 2019 included webinars and Twitter chats on subjects such as micropensions, financial inclusion for school leaders and ensuring technology doesn’t undermine inclusion. CFI documented these events on multiple websites and in the form of an e-magazine.
Founded in 2008, CFI works with microfinance practitioners, regulators, banks, investors and academics in an effort to increase financial inclusion and promote client protection through partnerships, advocacy and research on gender inequality, adaptation to climate change and the risks of digitalization. During 2018, Accion expended USD 6.3 million to support CFI.
Accion is a US-based nonprofit that was founded in 1961 and seeks to alleviate poverty by offering services such as microenterprise loans and business training. The organization has 110 partner financial services providers reaching entrepreneurs in 50 countries in Africa, the Americas and Asia. As of 2018, Accion reports total assets of USD 345 million.
