Boulder Microfinance Training Program

The Boulder Institute of Microfinance is once again hosting its annual Boulder Microfinance Training Program. The program includes three weeks of microfinance courses and exchanges with professionals in the industry. Bob Christen, Director of Microfinance at Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will head the program. Sponsors include the MasterCard Foundation and Agence Francaise de Developpement.

The Boulder Institute of Microfinance is a nonprofit organization founded in 2004, to create a platform for dialogue and critical thinking in microfinance. No information is available as to the organization’s annual budget. The program will take place at the foot of the Italian Alps in the Piedmont region on the International Training Center of the International Labour Organization (ITC-ILO) campus and will be offered in both French and English. Topics for this year’s conference include but are not limited to:

  • Best practices established from previous financial crises in countries such as Bolivia, Indonesia, Peru, and Russia.
  • Risks and benefits of replacing loans from financial institutions with client deposits.
  • Attractive deposit schemes for clients during times of crisis.
  • Relevant messages MFIs should be sending regulators as they confront the crisis.
  • Characteristics of businesses that flourish and fail during financial crises.
  • Types of training that MFIs can provide to clients to increase their chance of surviving (and repaying loans) during a crisis.

The registration deadline is June 20, 2009. Tuition cost is EUR 3,100 (USD 4,126), which includes a EUR 500 non-refundable deposit. Fees cover courses, program materials, coffee breaks, the inauguration reception, and the graduation dinner.
