ANNUAL MICROFINANCE SYMPOSIUM- FROM INFORMATION TO INNOVATION: HARNESSING SOCIAL DATA TO EMPOWER CHANGE

The 2009 Symposium will showcase research monographs written by students and young professionals selected for their exceptional writing, research and analysis of data, and is intended to promote innovative ideas in microfinance. The Symposium aims to further the academic and practical application of microfinance assessment information.

The event is being co-sponsored by The Foundation for International Community Assistance (FINCA International) and the John Templeton Foundation. FINCA International is a microfinance institution (MFI) established in Peru in 1993. According to the MFI’s 2007 Annual Report, FINCA International had USD 276.8 million worth of outstanding loans is 2007. The John Templeton Foundation was established in 1987, and it gives away about USD 60 million a year in research grants and programs to support the natural and human sciences, philosophy and theology, and research into free-market solutions to poverty.

The 4th Annual Microfinance Symposium will take place on April 17, 2009 at the Johns Hopkins’ School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) in Washington, DC. The keynote address will be given by Dr. Francis Fukuyama, Director of the SAIS international development program. FINCA International founder, Dr. John Hatch will also be presenting his remarks at the symposium.

The Washington, D.C. chapter of Women Advancing Microfinance (WAM) and SAIS career services will be co-sponsoring the Microfinance Career Event immediately preceding the Symposium. WAM was launched in 2003 for the purpose of advancing and supporting women working in microfinance through education, training, and the promotion of leadership opportunities The Career Event will begin at 10:00 AM and end at 12:00 PM. The Research Symposium will be held from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM, with a reception to follow.
