MICROCAPITAL BRIEF: Invest In Visions’ IIV Mikrofinanzfonds Refinances Alliance Myanmar with $3m Loan for Rural Microfinance

Germany-based Invest in Visions (IIV) recently disbursed a loan of USD 3 million from its fund IIV Mikrofinanzfonds to Alliance Myanmar, a microfinance institution in Myanmar. Alliance Myanmar is using the funds to refinance its debt to help it continue its support for rural entrepreneurs.

Alliance Myanmar was created in 2014 to “contribute to poverty alleviation and economic growth.” Its founders were Financial Systems Development Services (FIDES), a Swiss joint-stock company “focusing exclusively on the development of sustainable rural microfinance institutions,” and BASIX, a group of development entities in India. Alliance Myanmar makes loans averaging approximately USD 200, of which 80 percent go to female entrepreneurs. The institution has a portfolio of 148,000 loans outstanding, half of which are deployed in rural areas.

IIV, founded in 2006, offers investments in microfinance, agriculture, healthcare, education and social housing. IIV launched IIV Mikrofinanzfonds in 2011 to support micro-, small and medium-sized enterprises. Individual investors can invest as little as EUR 100 (USD 109) in the fund. As of January 2020, it supports 320,000 microentrepreneurs, of whom 58 percent are women, with an average loan size of USD 2,300.

BASIX, which is named for its Bhartiya Samruddhi Investments and Consulting Services unit, has operations in financial services, education, agricultural services, consulting and waste management.
