MICROCAPITAL BRIEF: AFI Invests $5m in Microfinance Institution AFK of Kosovo from Invest in Visions (IIV)

The Germany-based investing company Agents for Impact (AFI) recently informed MicroCapital that it has issued a loan of USD 5 million to the Agjencioni per Financim ne Kosove (AFK), a non-governmental organization (NGO) providing microcredit to businesses and individuals in Kosovo, on behalf of Germany-based Invest in Visions (IIV).

Established in 1999, AFK operates 29 branches as of 2023, offering business loans in amounts up to EUR 25,000 (USD 27,400) and household loans of up to EUR 5,000 (USD 5,400). As of an undisclosed date, the microfinance institution (MFI) reports having served 175,000 people with loans totaling EUR 346 million (USD 378 million) since the organization’s inception.

Launched in 2006, IIV manages “investments in sustainable agriculture, social enterprises and social impact lending.” The firm created its primary product, IIV Mikrofinanzfonds, in 2011 to invest in micro-, small and medium-sized enterprises via intermediaries in developing countries. It does this mainly via “small and medium-sized MFIs, particularly in rural areas.” The minimum investment in the fund is EUR 100 (USD 113). As of March 2023, IIV reported that IIV Mikrofinanzfonds had a volume of EUR 880 million (USD 969 million).

AFI was founded in 2018 and is dedicated to working with investors to make progress toward the UN Sustainable Development Goals. AFI does not disclose the volume of its operations.
