MICROFINANCE EVENT: 8th Global Housing Summit: “Breaking the Mold – New Ideas for Financing Affordable Housing”; May 29 – June 1, 2018; Washington, DC, USA

Event Summary: This event will review how technology, government policies and other factors are affecting the financing of housing for people with low incomes. The program on May 29 includes a visit to the World Bank’s headquarters and pre-conference sessions such as the “Launch Workshop” for the Global Community for Secondary Mortgage Market Institutions. The agenda for the three main conference days includes modules such as Harnessing Technology for Affordable Housing Finance, Capital Market Funding Solutions, and Win-Win: Affordable Housing and Public-Private Partnerships.

Background on Organizer: The World Bank finances a range of investment projects, including in education, healthcare and housing, as well as advising public and private entities on their investments. The World Bank Group, which seeks “to end extreme poverty and promote shared prosperity in a sustainable way,” comprises the following institutions: (1) the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the International Development Association, which make up the World Bank; (2) the International Finance Corporation; (3) the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency; and (4) the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes. The World Bank Group has 189 member countries and disbursed a total of USD 44 billion during 2017.
