MICROCAPITAL BRIEF: World Savings Bank Institute Members to Offer Financial Training, Products Aimed at Unbanked

The World Savings Bank Institute (WSBI), a Switzerland-based association representing savings and retail banks with EUR 4.3 trillion (USD 5.4 trillion) in assets, announced a new plan at the 23rd WSBI Congress in Marrakech, Morocco, whereby its members will review their products, tailoring some to the specific needs of the most vulnerable potential customers.

For example, WSBI member may use technology services to reach unserved and isolated groups. WSBI members will also begin financial education initiatives to increase the level of financial knowledge to its customers.

World Savings Banks Institute (WBSI) is a Switzerland-Based that represents savings and retail banks and associations thereof in 90 countries in Asia-Pacific, the Americas, Africa and Europe. At the end of 2010, these institutions operate through 227,000 branches and outlets, employ 2.2 million people and serve 600 million customers. Assets of member institutions amounted to US $15.6 trillion at the end of 2010.
