MICROCAPITAL BRIEF: Sudan’s Northern Darfur State Forms Higher Council of Microfinance

Osman Mohammed Yousif Kibir, governor of Sudan’s Northern Darfur state, has announced plans to create a Higher Council of Microfinance that will be tasked with: (1) creating strategies on developing microfinance; (2) establishing indicators of microfinance development; (3) preparing material to teach citizens how to use microfinance to improve the level of their family income; and (4) developing client protection policies.

According to a statement attributed to Ali Osman Mohamed Taha, vice-president of the republic and president of the Higher Council of Microfinance, Mr Kibir will serve as chairman of the council with Ali Mahmoud Abdul-Rassoul, Minister of Finance and National Economy, as his deputy. The other members of the council will include other members of government, social security institutions and civil society organizations.

The one Sudanese microfinance institution (MFI) that reported 2010 data to the US-based Microfinance Information Exchange (MIX) held a gross loan portfolio of USD 900,000 disbursed to approximately 4,000 borrowers.
