Avian Flu Causes Uncertain Future for Poultry Farmers in Bangladesh and a Struggle to Make Loan Repayments to Microfinance Institutions and Banks

The recent outbreaks of the avian influenza virus in Bangladesh just outside the capital, Dhaka, have caused poultry farmers and their creditor’s great concern. The World Poultry Science Association åö Bangladesh Branch (WPSA-BB) fears a disruption of the 50bn Bangladesh Taka (approx USD 726mm) industry if the ‘bird flu’ scare is not handled carefully. The President of the WPSA-BB, Mashiur Rahman has said an “outbreak will stall the booming poultry sector involving directly around 10mm people” which is predominant in the Savar, Gazipur, and Bogra regions.
