New York (PRWEB via PRWebDirect) September 20, 2007 — Pro Mujer Peru has been awarded the 2007 Award for Excellence in Microfinance from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

The Inter-American Awards for Microenterprise Development recognize institutions exhibiting growth of sustainable financial services and innovation in new products. Pro Mujer Peru was honored with the award for non-regulated financial institutions.

“We are delighted to receive this award, which celebrates our efforts to provide sustainable financial and health services to poor women in the rural and urban areas of southern Peru,” said Naldi Delgado, Director of Pro Mujer Peru, one of five institutions in the Pro Mujer network.

The IDB, a multilateral development bank, announced that Pro Mujer Peru “stood out for its efforts to reach women in rural areas and the high quality of its loan portfolio,” noting that nearly one-third of its clients live on less than US$1 a day.

Pro Mujer Peru will receive the award at the 10th Inter-American Microenterprise Forum, to be held in San Salvador on October 4. El Salvador’s President, Antonio Saca, and IDB President Luis Alberto Moreno will present the award.

Founded in 1999, Pro Mujer Peru offers a wide range of services to women entrepreneurs, including several types of loans, access to saving accounts, business and health training, and healthcare through alliances with local clinics and hospitals. The institution also provides counseling and other care for women and families dealing with alcoholism and domestic violence. Watch a video about Pro Mujer Peru >>
