MICROCAPITAL BRIEF: Microfinance Information Exchange (MIX) to Grant Public Access to Funding Structure Data Set

The Microfinance Information Exchange (MIX), a nonprofit organization founded in 2002 with headquarters in Washington, DC, has informed MicroCapital that it will be adding the MIX Funding Structure Data set to the MIX Market website in July 2010.

For fiscal year 2008, MIX has collected information on roughly 8,000 transactions from 800 MFIs. MIX anticipates public access to this database will increase microfinance transparency and enable a new level of analysis of funding flows to MFIs. Examples of this analysis can be seen in three papers MIX has published [1, 2, 3].

This data set anonymously aggregates data on microfinance institution (MFI) borrowing across various criteria: currency of origination, type or sub-type of lender, foreign or domestic lender, type of debt, MFI operating region, MFI operating country, interest rate and maturity. Users will be able to access the data from the existing MIX Market website, and will be able to answer a number of questions on the funding trends, such as:?

1. Amount of funding outstanding in US dollar terms for a given year in a country or a region of choice

2. Amount of funding outstanding in US dollar terms allocated to a variety of financial entities in a given region or country

3. Average interest rates and maturities of MFI borrowings in a given country/region or for a charter type of MFI

4. Amount outstanding in US dollar terms, average interest rates and maturities for a given type of lender (MIVs, commercial banks,
   government, etc.)
