The Luxembourg-based fund manager Bamboo Capital Partners recently selected David Grimaud as its CEO, marking the departure of Jean-Philippe de Schrevel, the company’s founder. Mr Grimaud has a background in impact investing and asset management from his work with the Switzerland-based Symbiotics Group and three France-based firms, Amundi, Crédit Agricole and Société Générale.
Bamboo Capital is a unit of the international development firm Palladium, which bought a minority stake in Bamboo Capital in 2020 and bought the rest of its shares in 2023. The firms’ goals include to: (1) distribute capital at a faster rate to emerging and frontier markets; (2) increase returns for investors; and (3) address global crises and long-term challenges.
Founded in 2007, Bamboo Capital focuses on financial inclusion, renewable energy, healthcare and agriculture. In these sectors, it funds firms active in low- and middle-income countries with the aim of getting them from the seed stage to the growth stage. As of December 2022, Bamboo Capital had invested in – among other firms – 43 microfinance institutions, 23 off-grid solar energy companies, eight financial technology (fintech) enterprises and six healthcare companies. In addition to Luxembourg, Bamboo Capital has offices in Colombia, Kenya, Singapore and Switzerland.
Palladium is active in 90 countries and has expertise in impact measurement, governance, environmental issues, health and inclusivity. During 2022, its investments reportedly impacted 76 million people, including Ukrainian refugees, students in Indonesia, cocoa farmers in Peru and UK citizens facing unemployment. Its investments totaled USD 2.8 billion, reportedly generating an aggregate increase of USD 700 million in household incomes.
