WaterPartners International, a US based non-profit organisation, is in the midst of increasing growth in their WaterCredit Initiative which applies the basic principles of microfinance to the water and sanitation sector. The organisation aims to “provide safe drinking water and sanitation to people in developing countries” and has been running pilot projects since 2004. With the help of partner organisations in the field, WaterPartners provides small unsecured loans to individuals and communities which are used to finance the up-front costs of water and sanitation systems.
