Summary of Event: The Banking with the Poor Network (BWTP), SEEP Network, Appui au Développement Autonome (ADA), Foundation for Development Cooperation (FDC) and the Microfinance Council of the Philippines (MCPI) will host the fourth annual Asia Network Summit. This event will provide an opportunity for representatives to discuss how regional network collaboration can make the microfinance sector more robust, transparent and client-focused.

Background on Organizers:

The Banking with the Poor (BWTP) Network is an Asian microfinance network based in Singapore that is an initiative of the nonprofit Foundation for Development Cooperation of Australia. BWTP is an association of a range of microfinance stakeholders committed to improving the quality of life of the poor through promoting and facilitating their access to sustainable financial services.

The Foundation for Development Cooperation (FDC) was founded in 1990 and is based in Brisbane, Australia, with branch offices in Singapore and Fiji. FDC conducts policy-oriented research and mobilizes Australian and international support for development efforts including microfinance.

Founded in 1985, the Small Enterprise Education and Promotion (SEEP) Network seeks to connect microenterprise practitioners to develop practical guidance and tools, build capacity and set standards for the industry. As of June 2011, its members are active in 171 countries. Headquartered in Washington DC, SEEP is governed by its members, which include microfinance institutions (MFIs) and other nongovernmental organizations (NGOs).

Founded in 1994, Appui au Développement Autonome (ADA) is a nonprofit organization based in Luxembourg. ADA’s activities include developing new financial products, assisting in the capacity building of microfinance institutions (MFIs) and improving information on and awareness of microfinance activities. As of 2011, ADA works with approximately 400 MFIs across three continents.

The Microfinance Council of the Philippines Incorporated (MCPI) is an industry network in the Philippines, comprising 36 microfinance practitioners and nine service providers as of May 2011. Regular membership is restricted to NGOs, thrift banks, development banks, rural banks, cooperatives and credit unions that have a minimum of 1,000 active clients and an outstanding loan portfolio of at least PHP 3 million (USD 64,800). MCPI forges partnerships with government institutions including Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, Department of Finance-National Credit Council, National Anti-Poverty Commission, People’s Credit and Finance Corporation, Land Bank of the Philippines and the National Economic and Development Authority.
