Mr. Crawford is Chief Executive Officer of MicroVest Capital Management, responsible for the development, management and growth of MicroVest, including developing and implementing business development strategies and supervising investment deals. He led the launch of MicroVest I, LP, a commercial private equity vehicle focused on microfinance in North America. He has over 20 years of experience with microfinance institutions (MFIs) and capital markets and has worked in Latin America, Africa and Asia. 

Previously, Mr. Crawford worked for the Latin American Financial Markets Division at the International Finance Corporation (IFC), created and ran Seed Capital Development Fund and was the Assistant Project Director for Africa Venture Capital Project. Mr. Crawford received his bank training at Chase Manhattan Bank in the mid 1980’s after working in Africa for the Red Cross and the US State Department. He graduated from Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) (US) in 1983 and Bates College (US) in 1980.

MFX Solutions Inc., a company providing currency hedging solutions designed specifically for microfinance, closed its first hedging transaction, a USD 4 million currency swap with MicroVest I, LP. The cross-currency swap transaction allowed MicroVest I, a Washington DC-based microfinance investment fund, to make a USD 4 million, 3-year loan in Columbian pesos to Fundacion Mundo Mujer, a Columbian-based microfinance institution. MICROCAPITAL.ORG STORY: Peruvian Commercial Bank, Banco de Credito, to Acquire Microfinance Group, Financiera Edyficar from CARE, International Finance Corporation (IFC), and MicroVest (MV)

Banco de Crédito del Perú (BCP) recently announced its deal with nongovernmental organization CARE, to purchase a 77.2% stake in the Peru-based microfinance company, Financiera Edyficar. BCP is a Peruvian publicly-traded commercial bank founded in 1889 and owned by Credicorp Ltd, a financial holding company in Peru. BCP offers services and products to businesses and individuals, as well as small and medium-sized enterprises [1]. In March 2008, BCP reported total assets of USD 17.3 billion, a debt-equity ratio of 1,422.10%, and a return on average assets of 2.13%. It has a BBB- credit rating from both Standard & Poor’s and Fitch Ratings. As of June 2009, BCP claimed 32% of loans and 36% of deposits in the Peruvian banking system. Approximately 97% of BCP is owned by Credicorp [2].

MICROCAPITAL STORY: Kinnevik Invests $10m in Microfinance Equity Fund MicroVest II

Swedish company Investment AB Kinnevik has committed to investing USD 10 million in MicroVest II , an equity fund focusing on microfinance and part of the microfinance investment group MicroVest Capital Funds. Additionally, Kinnevik announced the acquisition of 30 percent of shares worth USD 4 million in an Ukrainian farming company. Henrik Persson, Head of New Investments at Kinnevik, comments, “”Micro financing and farming are focus sectors for new investments in Kinnevik and we are pleased to have identified investments within these growth areas.” In October 2007, MicroCapital reported that Kinnevik invested USD 14 million in the African microfinance institution (MFI) Bayport Financial Services.
