NEWS WIRE: Liberia: Waifem Begins Micro-Finance Course Tomorrow

The West African Institute for Financial and Economic Management (WAIFEM) will this Saturday begin a sub-regional course on ‘Micro-finance Operation for Post-Conflict Countries at the Central Bank of Liberia (CBL).

The sub-regional course is the first to be conducted in Liberia and will run up to August 24, 2007.

The objective of the course is to develop and strengthen micro-finance sectors in post-conflict countries in the sub-region.

According to a CBL release, the course will specifically enable participants to learn innovative strategies in the leadership and management of micro-finance institutions, upgrade their skills in micro-finance programming and assist them analyze and adapt current best practices from varied experiences in their own situations.

The course will bring together senior and middle level officials of central banks in the sub-region, micro-finance institutions, commercial and rural banks, non-governmental organizations and other practitioners involved in the supervision, management and operations of micro-finance programmes.

WAIFEM is a sub-regional training organization, established in 1996 by the central banks of Liberia, Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone and the Gambia.

Its mission is to help develop critical skills for macro-economic and financial management among staff of central banks of member countries and other public sector bodies with core economic management responsibilities in the sub-region. The organization is headquartered in Lagos, Nigeria..
