NCR Corporation, a US-based technology company, has developed an automated teller machine (ATM) that uses biometric technologies to make it more accessible to illiterate and semi-literate users. Based on research conducted in the slums of Mumbai, the Pillar ATM features a contactless card reader, a fingerprint scanner, a cash dispenser and a receipt printer. The device will require users to place their thumb on a sensor and push color-coded buttons to select the amount of cash they want. To address security concerns, the ATM can be bolted to the ground and its cash box is designed to collapse should there be a breach of the unit’s exterior.
NCR plans to test five prototype Pillar ATMs and then release the machines within a year.
