Standard Chartered Bank announced it would be a principal sponsor of the 2008 Global Microfinance Investment Congress. The event is presented by PlaNet Finance in association with American Conference Institute and costs USD 1,495 before March 31, 2008 and USD 1,595 afterwards. Delegates can also attend 1 to 2 workshops for an additional USD 500 or USD 800, respectively.

The 2008 Global Microfinance Investment Congress intends to evaluate current microfinance investments, discuss their implications, and present a blueprint for future, sustainable microfinance business. Thus the event is aimed towards microfinance investment vehicles (MVIs), commercial banks, insurance companies, government authorities, and microfinance institutions (MFIs).

Sample topics include: building risk portfolios to make successful and safe investment in microfinance; country case studies; the evolution of fixed income investments in microfinance; equity investment exit strategies and the future of secondary markets; and expanding the role of venture capital in microfinance.

Standard Chartered Bank is an international bank, which is listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange and London Stock Exchange. It actually ranks in the top 25 companies in the FTSE-100 by market capitalization. In 2006, the bank gave USD 70 million to MFIs through its Microfinance Fund, reaching 560,000 clients in Africa and Asia. This is part of a 5-year pledge to generate USD 500 million for MFIs in the same regions.

PlaNet Finance is an international, non-profit trade association, which supports initiatives which assist and develop microfinance. Services include technical assistance and training to MFIs, ratings by Planet Rating, financing of young MFIs by PlaNet MicroFund, and equity investment by MicroCred. The American Conference Institute is an organization which operates as a think-thank and provides business intelligences to major industry sectors, the law, and public policy. It produces roughly 220 events each year.
