Summary of Event: The XII FOROMIC 2009 will provide a platform for all stakeholders in the microfinance and microenterprise development industry to meet their colleagues and exchange best practices, methodologies, and strategies to promote and support the microenterprise sector. Through its many technical sessions, panel discussion, workshops, and training, the XII FOROMIC will be focusing on the current economic and financial crisis and how it affects the microenterprise sector in Latin America and the Caribbean. Other topics include responsible finance, regulatory improvements, technology in microfinance, innovations in reaching new clients, and new developments in old products, such as micro-insurance.

Background on the Organizer: The Bank was formally created in 1959, when the Organization of American States drafted the Articles of Agreement establishing the Inter-American Development Bank. The IDB Group is composed of the Inter-American Development Bank, the Inter-American Investment Corporation (IIC) and the Multilateral Investment Fund (MIF). The IIC focuses on support for small and medium-sized businesses, while the MIF promotes private sector growth through grants and investments, with an emphasis on microenterprise. The IDB partners with countries to combat poverty and promote social equity through programs tailored to local conditions. Working with governments as well as with the private sector, the Bank seeks to achieve sustainable economic growth, increase competitiveness, modernize public institutions, and foster free trade and regional integration. MIF resources go towards projects falling under three main categories:
1) Business Framework
2) Enterprise Development
3) Financial Democracy
