Summary of Event:
As part of the Global Health Council 2011 Conference, Strengthening Health Outcomes through the Private Sector (SHOPS) and the US Agency for International Development (USAID) are hosting a forum on the potential for microfinance institutions (MFIs) to assist in improving health in developing countries. The discussion will focus on successful interventions, developments in health products and services, the status of global health care systems and issues of affordability and availability. The link between microfinance and health will be explored through an evaluation of microfinance as both a financial tool and a delivery mechanism for health services.

Background on Organizers:
SHOPS is an initiative of USAID, a government agency that provides international economic and humanitarian assistance. SHOPS brings together nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and private sector stakeholders to explore and address health needs such as family planning, maternal and child health and HIV/AIDS in developing countries.

USAID focuses on areas such as economic growth, agriculture, trade, global health, democracy, conflict prevention and humanitarian assistance. Under the Development Credit Authority (DCA), it provides partial credit guarantees that cover up to 50 percent of defaults on wholesale loans made by private financial institutions to institutions that lend on a retail basis to underserved borrowers.
