Event Summary: The theme of APHF4 is “Housing as a foundation for breaking the poverty cycle in Asia Pacific.” The event is a biennial forum that unites public and private sector stakeholders with the aim of seeking solutions to poverty housing issues. Forum tracks include: 1) accessible finance for poor families to purchase affordable housing; 2) climate change response and disaster relief efforts by governments, businesses and NGOs; 3) private sector impact on poverty housing issues including health, education, sanitation, sustainable energy, adequate housing and access to clean water; 4) housing policy and regulation reforms; and 5) the analysis of social, economic, cultural and environmental factors and their roles in achieving sustainable housing solutions.
Background on Organizers: Habitat for Humanity is a US-based nonprofit whose mission is to provide poor people with clean, safe and affordable places to live. Since its inception in 1976, Habitat for Humanity has engaged the services of homeowners and volunteers to build houses under the supervision of trained builders. In the US, the organization offers no-interest mortgage loans directly to low-income families, and outside of the US it partners with microfinance institutions to distribute and service home loans. Habitat for Humanity operates in all fifty US states and 100 countries globally. As of 2012, Habitat for Humanity reported total net assets of USD 253 million.
