Developing Inclusive Financial Systems for the Poor: How Funders Can Make a Difference

Amman, Jordan (Dead Sea), June 14-18, 2009

The Consultative Group to Assist the Poor (CGAP), an independent policy and research center housed at the World Bank, will host the next training course for microfinance funders from June 14-18, 2009 in Amman, Jordan. The course is ideal for donors or investors who are new or recent to microfinance. The content has been updated to reflect the latest evolutions in microfinance. The course is primarily designed for project managers and investment officers making funding decisions on microfinance, who may be new to microfinance, with previous experience in other development sectors or the financial sector. The course is also useful for persons interested in a refresher on latest developments and trends in microfinance. Over 500 participants from 70 countries have already taken part in previous courses.   Cost to attend is USD 1,800 for three days and USD 2,100 for five days.  The course will be conducted in English.  To view a brochure on the event, click here.

The Short Course (June 14-16)

Participants will gain a broad overview of microfinance, including the following topics:

  • What is a Financial Systems Approach?
  • Clients at the Center – Why is Access to Financial Services Important?
  • Understanding the Financial Market at Micro, Meso and Macro Levels
  • Financial System Gap Analysis Framework
  • Site Visits to Microfinance Institutions in Jordan
  • Other Current Issues in Microfinance

The Full Course (June 14-18)

Participants will apply skills and knowledge learned throughout the course to assess a funding request, using a case study. Specific topics covered will include:

  • What Constitutes Appropriate Roles of Funders and Factors for Effective Involvement?
  • Micro, Meso and Macro Level Project Assessment
  • Making a Funding Decision: Comparative Advantage, Instruments, Collaboration
  • How to Structure Monitoring and Reporting

Participants will receive payment instructions upon acceptance of their application. Cancellation fees apply.

Lunches, breaks, field trips, and materials are covered by tuition. Participants are responsible for travel and costs of room and board.

Hotel rooms are made available at a pre-negotiated and often discounted rate with the hotel hosting the training.
