The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), a UK-based multilateral institution, recently announced it will loan EUR 40 million (USD 44.9 million) to Union Internationale de Banques (UIB), a Tunisian bank, to support small and medium-sized enterprises’ (SMEs’) “lending activities and expand access to finance for underserved private SMEs”.
UIB is a subsidiary of the France-based Societe Generale with a loan portfolio of EUR 1.7 billion (USD 1.91 billion), deposits of TND 3.6 billion (USD 1.48 billion) and total assets of TND 4.7 billion (USD 1.93 billion) as of 2016. For the same year, its return on assets was 1.8 percent and its return on equity was 22.5 percent. Societe Generale was founded in 1864 and reported serving 31 million customers in 66 countries with total assets of EUR 1.38 trillion (USD 1.55 trillion) as of December 31, 2016.
EBRD was founded in 1991 and has 65 shareholding countries as of 2017. The bank, which focuses on “the promotion of private and entrepreneurial initiative,” invested EUR 9.4 billion (USD 10.1 billion) in companies in 30 countries during 2016.
