The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), the country’s central banking authority, has set a target of disbursing PKR 12.2 billion (USD 134 million) to microfinance banks to deliver credit to the agricultural sector during fiscal year 2012. Total credit disbursement to the farming sector grew to PKR 149.7 billion (USD 1.64 billion) for the period from July 2011 to January 2012, an increase of PKR 24.8 billion (USD 273 million) over the same period one year earlier [1].
The aggregated gross loan portfolio for the 31 Pakistani MFIs reporting to the US-based nonprofit Microfinance Information Exchange (MIX) is USD 279.3 million with a total of 1.9 million active borrowers as of 2010.
