MICROCAPITAL BRIEF: NilePay, Zain to Launch Mobile Money Service in South Sudan

NilePay PLC, an electronic financial services company in South Sudan, and the local member of the Zain Group, a Kuwait-based mobile telecommunications firm, are launching a licensed mobile money service in South Sudan. The NilePay service will allow customers to transfer money to individuals via their mobile phones domestically and internationally, as well as deposit or withdraw funds from registered agents in South Sudan. In the future, the company plans to expand its reach to Ethiopia, Djibouti, Angola and Yemen.

Asha Marie, the Director of NilePay Mobile Money, said, “When digital finance is unencumbered, people are empowered. The move to introduce mobile money payments is part of our strategy to bring the benefits of electronic payments to the people of South Sudan.”

Founded in 1983, the Zain Group serves approximately 49 million subscribers in Bahrain, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, South Sudan and Sudan, including 815,000 in South Sudan. Members of the Zain Group offer a licensed mobile money service in South Sudan via the app mGurush, in partnership with South Sudan-based Trinity Technologies Limited, and also in Iraq via the app Zain Cash. For the first six months of 2019, the Zain Group generated net profits of KWD 97.3 million (USD 321 million) on consolidated revenues of KWD 811 million (USD 2.7 billion).
