MICROCAPITAL BRIEF: AVPA, Investorflow.org, Forge Partnership to Develop Impact Investments in Africa, Resulting in Expanding Membership Base, Increasing Capital Flow in Africa, and Rising Overall Investor Collaboration

African Venture Philanthropy Alliance (AVPA), a Kenya-based “Pan-African network for social investors,” and Investorflow.org, a US-based platform that helps impact investors find co-investors, recently announced a partnership. Dr Frank Aswani, the CEO of AVPA, stated that the tie-up “will allow AVPA to add another 500-plus investors onto the AVPA Deal Share Platform and… enable greater co-investment and flow of financial, human, and intellectual capital into African social investments,” particularly from North America.

Founded in 2018, AVPA is dedicated to “collaborating to increase the flow of capital into social investments across Africa” to advance the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The firm’s headquarters are in the city of Nairobi, and it also has offices in Nigeria and South Africa. AVPA is associated with the Asian Venture Philanthropy Network; the European Venture Philanthropy Association; and Latimpacto, which is active in Latin America.

Established in January 2017, Investorflow.org is a program of the US-based NGO Realize Impact that offers a free, global platform for impact investors to meet and invest together in deals. The site lists potential deals that are posted by investors and are organized by criteria such as geography, sector and size. Investorflow.org reports traffic from 500 investors, including “individuals, family offices, foundations, funds, investing groups, and support organizations.” As of 2018, half of its members were active in Africa, and 6 percent were headquartered in the region.
