WASHINGTON, November 15 – We are pleased to announce the winners of the second annual CGAP Microfinance Photography Contest.

Congratulations to the overall winner, Tapas Banerjee (India), second place winner Michael Foley (USA), and third place winner Syed Tahir Jamal (Pakistan). We received 880 entries in response to our call for images that would capture the diversity, dynamism, and impact of microfinance today. The judges selected a total of twenty-one winning photographs. These will be displayed in various publications, online, in multimedia presentations, and in an exhibition at the World Bank in Washington, D.C.

We are extremely pleased with the range of the entries, coming from 46 countries in all regions of the world. Photographers of all levels submitted both digital and printed photographs. The winning images are currently featured on our web site at www.cgap.org/photocontest.

Entries were judged on originality, technical excellence, composition, overall impact, and artistic merit. The panel of judges consisted of Elizabeth Littlefield, Director and CEO of CGAP; Sadie Quarrier, Picture Editor for National Geographic Magazine; and Jonathan Ernst, freelance photographer for Reuters and the Washington Post.

Our thanks to all those who entered. It was very competitive and we hope you will try again in future years.
