October 27 – Microfinance Information Exchange, Inc. (MIX) attended the Proxfin conference in Quebec, Canada recently to give a presentation on social performance indicators and how to measure them. The conference, titled “Social Performance: How to Optimize, Measure and Promote It,” was attended by MFI (microfinance institution) networks for savings and credit cooperatives from 15 countries throughout the developing world.

MIX’s presentation was part of the panel titled “Social Balance Sheet: What Should Be Included and How Should It Be Presented?”, and included an overview of the work the Social Performance Task Force has undertaken since its creation in 2005, how the indicators for measuring social performance were selected, what MFIs participated in the process, and what the indicators are. The Social Performance Task Force is a group of industry experts, including MFI managers, network representatives, funders and others, created to help define common indicators for MFIs to use for measuring social performance at the MFI level and to develop standards and guidelines in the social performance area, similar to what has been done for financial transparency in microfinance.

MIX has been an active member of the Social Performance Task force from the beginning, working to bring transparency to the area of social performance, so MFIs can evaluate how they are progressing in reaching the populations they intend to reach. MIX expects to begin posting social performance data from MFIs the first quarter of 2009.
