Summary of Event: The conference will cover the effects of the global financial crisis on the microfinance industry. The key questions that will be considered are:
- What are the most important risk factors for microfinance institutions (MFIs) in 2010?
- What are the funding expectations and what type of funding products will be necessary?
Background on Organizers:
The Microfinance Centre (MFC) is an international grassroots network of 105 microfinance institutions from the Europe and Central Asia region. The MFC’s mission is to contribute to poverty reduction and human potential development by promoting a socially oriented and sustainable microfinance sector. As a regional microfinance industry facilitator, MFC seeks to develop best practices, stimulate innovation and influence industry approaches.
The Ministry of Economy and Budget Planning of the Republic of Kazakhstan was founded in 2002 in accordance with the Declaration of the President of Kazakhstan. Its founding merged the functions of economic planning of the Ministry of Economy and Trade of the Republic of Kazakhstan and budget planning of the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
The Association of Microfinance Organizations of Kazakhstan (AMFOK) was founded in 2004 by six microfinance organizations of Kazakhstan to address problems of the development of the microfinance sector in the country. As of 2007, AMFOK has 58 members, with approximately 90,000 microfinance clients.

About the Presenters:
Julia Abakaeva is a microfinance specialist and a member of CGAP’s Technology Team, which focuses on the innovative use of technology to expand access to finance for the unbanked in developing countries.
Kubanych Abdraimov is Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Association of Microfinance Institutions of the Kyrgyz Republic.
David Alimbarashvili is the credit risk management unit head at Liberty Bank, Tbilisi, Georgia, and a trainer / consultant of the MFC.
