Cost: The standard fee to attend the event is USD 25 per person. Scholarships, which include free admission and an option to purchase lunch, are available to students of certain local educational institutions and members and clients of certain local business development centers.

Summary of Event:
This conference brings together practitioners and researchers to discuss innovative microfinance programs in St. Louis and share the challenges and successes in implementing them. It seeks to provide local nonprofits, financial institutions, universities and individuals an opportunity to learn about various microfinance resources and models. The conference will also provide an overview of microfinance across the globe as well as an introduction to asset building and financial capability.

Proceeds from conference fees will be awarded as “Gateway to Opportunities Micro-Investment Grants” to local small businesses and microfinance programs selected by participants during the conference.

Background on Organizers:
Established in 1963, the University of Missouri–St. Louis is the newest of four universities in the University of Missouri system. The university offers bachelors, masters and doctoral programs through the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business Administration, the College of Education, the College of Fine Arts and Communication, the College of Nursing and the College of Optometry.

Citi Community Development, part of US-based Citibank, is dedicated to empowering underserved communities through commercial and philanthropic funding, innovative financial services and collaboration with like-minded institutions. Community initiatives include neighbourhood revitalization, enterprise development, financial capability and asset building.

Citi Microfinance, created in 2005 as part of US-based Citibank, is engaged with approximately 100 microfinance institutions (MFIs), networks and investors in 40 countries. It aims to expand the range and reach of financial services available to poor people by offering products and services including financing, access to capital markets, transaction services, hedging foreign exchange risk, credit, savings, remittances and insurance. Information on the budget of Citi Microfinance is not available in its website.

The Incarnate Word Foundation is a ministry of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word. It seeks to support faith-based ministries that foster healthy lives, promote spiritual growth and support the creation of healthy communities through its work with organizations that provide education, foster care and social services in St. Louis.

About the Presenters:
Speakers include Bob Annibale, Global Director of Citi Microfinance, and Michael Sherraden, the Benjamin E Youngdahl Professor of Social Development and founding director of the Brown School’s Center for Social Development at Washington University in St. Louis.
