Background on the organizer: SEED (formerly known as the SEED Initiative) is a Germany-based nonprofit forum focused on supporting the development of small-scale social and environmental enterprises in countries with developing and emerging economies. SEED was launched at the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development in South Africa as a partnership among the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Switzerland-based International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). In addition to the founders, other partners in the SEED forum include: the governments of Flanders, Germany, India, the Netherlands, South Africa, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States of America; the European Union; and US-based Conservation International. SEED operates primarily through four activities: (1) the SEED Awards, an annual award scheme recognizing “innovative” social and environmental enterprises; (2) SEED Support, a business development service; (3) SEED Research and Learning, a research arm; and (4) SEED Forum and Network, a platform on which SEED can interact.
