Summary of Events: The Victoria Microcredit Conference intends to answer common questions of North Americans regarding microfinance: Is it charity? Is it increasing social justice or just an interesting business opportunity? And is it just for the developing world, or can it be applied here at home? The conference is also intended to enable Rotarians and others to become actively engaged in microcredit and to network with practitioners and supporters of microfinance.

Background on Organizer: Rotary District 5020 is a regional collection of Rotary Clubs that are part of Rotary International, an organization of service clubs that promote humanitarian efforts and ethical practices in all vocations. Rotary District 5020 was founded in 1914 and includes Rotary Clubs from Vancouver Island, British Columbia, to the Olympic Peninsula in Washington, USA.

Event Themes and Topics: The conference will include a talk by Phil Smith, author of A Billion Bootstraps, a book about microcredit as a poverty alleviation tool, and workshops on microfinance performance measures, microfinance in Africa and sustainability in microfinance.
