Summary of Event: International Development Law Organization (IDLO) network of jurists, bankers and representatives of microfinance institutions (MFIs) from the developing world will join together to discuss the lessons learned on regulation and legislation of microfinance as a means of poverty alleviation. The focus of the conference will be on the impact of existing domestic commercial law and regulations on the provision of financial services to the poor, as well as how to best protect consumers, many of whom are illiterate. The conference will also emphasize the importance of considering how the European Union can best support microfinance within Europe and in the developing world.

Background on Organizer: The International Development Law Organization, which operates in Italy, Australia, and Afghanistan, serves as a technical service provider and consulting organization, that aims to strengthen judicial and local governmental institutions to protect individual rights of the poor and promote a feasible legal structure for trade and investment in developing countries.
