Summary of Event: Attendees will discuss the opportunities and challenges of implementing digital finance services in developing countries, such as the need for transparent and safe digital products tailor-made for low-income segments of the population living in remote areas. A primary goal of the session is to select which research lines could best guide this field.

Background on Organizers: This event is organized by University Meets Microfinance (UMM) and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH. University Meets Microfinance (UMM) is a European initiative co-founded in 2009 by Freie Universitat Berlin (FUB) and PlaNet Finance, a french nonprofit organization established in 1998 that aims to alleviate poverty through microfinance. The purpose of UMM is to connect university students in Europe with microfinance professionals via seminars, lectures, workshops, mentorships, joint research, scholarships and award opportunities. Since 2012, UMM has been co-financed by the German development agency Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (which is known by its German acronym BMZ), and it receives additional support from the European Union, the French development agency Agence Française de Développement (AFD), the European Investment Bank Institute and the Frankfurt School of Finance and Management. GIZ is an agency of the German government. It operates in 130 countries in an effort to promote sustainable development by providing financial advisory services and funding. During fiscal year 2013, GIZ conducted business valued at EUR 1.9 billion (USD 2.15 billion).
