Summary of Event: The event is intended to teach students about the field of microfinance and social impact through interaction with professionals working in the field. Panel discussions will address themes including: (1) technological advances in microfinance; (2) nonprofit vs. for-profit ventures; and (3) microentrepreneurs [1]. The keynote address will feature Jeffrey Ashe, who is both a professor at the Columbia School of International and Public Affairs and the Director of Community Finance at Oxfam America. The conference will also feature the final round of the Penn Microfinance Club case competition, which involves students working in teams “solving challenging and complex problems facing microfinance communities.”

Background on Organizers: Penn Microfinance is a student organization at the University of Pennsylvania that seeks “to educate and empower students through partnerships with microfinance institutions, hands-on experiences, and networking opportunities” [1]. The organization periodically sends student teams to work with microfinance organizations in Bangladesh, Brazil, Indonesia, Philippines and Rwanda. The organization also hosts a microfinance conference each year [1].
