Summary of Event: The symposium will focus on microfinance, entrepreneurs and poverty in the US, and attempt to address the sustainability of current business models, the effects of product design on product take-up and impact, and the opportunities and challenges facing the sector going forward. Sessions include “Helps and Hindrances: Credit Cards and Credit Histories”; “MF [Microfinance] Lending to Entrepreneurs in the US”; and “HH [Household] Use of Finance: The US Finanical Diaries Project.”

Background on Organizer: The Microfinance and Impact Investing Initiative (MI3) is an interdisciplinary program at Haverford College, a post-secondary educational institution located in the US state of Pennsylvania. MI3 seeks to expose students to “the use of financial and human capital to address social problems” through workshops, events, projects and research.

About the Presenters: Jonathan Morduch is a professor of public policy and economics at the Wagner Graduate School of Public Service at New York University and is a researcher at the US Financial Diaries project, a research study on financial activity in low-income households in the US. Ira Lieberman is the co-founder of CGAP (Consultative Group to Assist the Poor), a US-based nonprofit policy and research center that seeks to increase financial access for low-income people worldwide, and is president of consulting and advisory company Lipam International, Inc. of the US.
