MICROFINANCE EVENT: International Insurance Society (IIS) to Host Annual Seminar: Patronage of Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah of Jordan Brings Microfinance Focus

International Insurance Society’s 45th Annual Seminar: Maintaining Sustainability in a Changing World

June 7-10, 2009, Amman, Jordan

About the Event: The International Insurance Society (IIS), a multinational organization that provides information, education, and networking opportunities for the insurance community, is presenting their 45th annual seminar, Maintaining Sustainability in a Changing World. The seminar explores several themes, including the impact of the financial crisis on the insurance industry, the image of the insurance sector, and the cultural and political landscape of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA).

One of the key topics of the program is microfinance, highlighted by the fact that the seminar will be held under the patronage of Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah of Jordan. Queen Rania has been an active proponent of microfinance for many years; she not only sits on the Board of Directors of the Foundation for International Community Assistance (FINCA), a global microfinance institution, but she was also named a Global Emissary for the 2005 UN Year of Microcredit. Queen Rania also chairs the MENA Executive Council on Microfinance, which is managed by the Consultative Group to Assist the Poor (CGAP). As microfinance institutions begin to offer a wider range of products and services, micro-insurance has emerged as a way for MFIs to help clients reduce vulnerability to risks such as economic shocks, natural disasters, and personal injury. The introduction of microfinance to discussions at the IIS annual seminar represents a way for the insurance community to better understand the opportunities of the growing micro-insurance sector.
