Summary of Event: This conference aims to bring together bankers from emerging markets to share information and discuss how financial institutions can empower entrepreneurs. The event’s theme is “empowering entrepreneurs to build a better world,” and it will cover a range of topics including (1) stimulating entrepreneurship; (2) the role of financial institutions in promoting foreign trade and innovation and providing support to farmers small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs); (3) the adoption of social and environmental standards in the banking sector; (4) and social entrepreneurship.

Background on Organizers: Nederlandse Financierings-Maatschappij voor Ontwikkelingslanden (FMO) is a Dutch public-private development bank that was founded in 1970. It supports financial institutions and governments through loans, guarantees and other investment promotion activities including local-currency investments. FMO is owned by the Dutch government, which holds a 51-percent stake, along with commercial banks, trade unions, employers’ associations and individual investors. In 2013, FMO reported total assets of EUR 6.2 billion (USD 8.5 billion). FMO operates in Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America and the Caribbean.
