MICROFINANCE EVENT: EBRD, National Association of Business Women of Tajikistan (NABWT), Government of Tajikistan to Host “Symposium of Women Entrepreneurs of Central Asia and Afghanistan”, Dushanbe, March 27 – 28, 2014

Summary of Event: This event will serve as a platform to discuss the challenges faced by businesswomen with attendees to include 200 businesswomen from Central Asia and Afghanistan, parliamentary representatives from Central Asian countries and staff of development agencies and local and international financial institutions. The topics that will be discussed are: changes in the business environment of countries such as Afghanistan, Russia, Tajikistan and Turkey; identifying and overcoming problems such as limited access to information, lack of financial resources and training opportunities; and unsupportive policy and regulatory frameworks. The National Association of Business Women of Tajikistan (NABWT), a nonprofit with 620 members as of 2010, will also announce the winners of a business plan competition for young entrepreneurs competition and will initiate competition for Woman Entrepreneur of the Year – Farah 2014.

Background on Organizers: European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is a multilateral institution headquartered in London. The bank began operations in 1991 upon the agreement of 40 countries, and it is owned by 61 countries as well as the European Investment Bank and the European Union as of 2012. It aims to finance operations that are both commercially viable and assist development in Central Asia, Eastern Europe and North Africa. It does this by providing loans, debt securities, equity investments, guarantees and technical assistance to micro- and small businesses via commercial banks and non-bank microfinance institutions (MFIs). In 2013, EBRD invested EUR 8.5 billion (USD 11.4 billion) in 392 projects across 34 countries.

NABWT, established in 1995, is a Tajiskistan-based nonprofit organization that trains women to help them find jobs and also helps women entrepreneurs in starting their businesses. It also provides consulting services to small- and medium-sized enterprises and lobby for the rights and interests of women entrepreneurs. It has 20 offices across Tajikistan. As of 2010, NABWT had 620 members.
