MICROFINANCE EVENT: Center for Financial Inclusion, Visa, Citi to Host Webinar on “Financial Inclusion 2020”

Summary of Event: The goal of this webinar is to provide more information on “Financial Inclusion 2020,” a global initiative recently launched by three US-based entities: the nonprofit Center for Financial Inclusion, payment technology firm Visa and the charitable division of financial services provider Citi, the Citi Foundation. The event will focus on the role each organization will play in achieving the goal of the effort, which is to increase financial inclusion for people worldwide.

Background on the Organizers:
The Citi Foundation provides grants and guarantees focusing on the areas of microfinance, small and growing businesses, education, asset building and neighborhood revitalization. As of December 2011, the institution’s investments totaled USD 78 million. Citi Foundation is the charitable arm of US-based financial service provider Citigroup.

Visa is a payments technology company based in the United States. It partners with financial institutions to provide credit, debit and prepaid cards to consumers. It also offers payment programs and consulting services for commercial clients. As of June 30, 2011, Visa’s network included 1.9 million automated teller machines (ATMs) and 1.9 billion Visa cards. As of September 30, 2011, Visa reported total assets of USD 34.8 billion, net income of USD 3.65 billion and 15,500 financial institution customers in 200 countries and territories.

The Center for Financial Inclusion at Accion (CFI) was established in 2008 as a branch of the US-based nonprofit Accion to promote universal financial access. The center works to bring together relevant parties to perform research, produce publications and develop campaigns to further its goal of increasing financial inclusion. The mission of Accion is to alleviate poverty by providing financial products such as microenterprise loans and business training. As of 2011, Accion reports total assets of USD 325 million and an active loan portfolio of USD 5.5 billion serving 5.1 million borrowers.
