Cost: The one-day event on December 8 costs USD 750, and the optional two-day workshop on December 9 and December 10 costs USD 745.

Summary of Event: The underlying theme of the primary event is “Islamic Microfinance – A Hope for Poor”, while the optional two-day workshop titled “Shariah and Marketing Techniques in Microfinance.” The Global Islamic Microfinance Forum will teach participants about the Islamic microfinance model in an effort to encourage its practice nationally and globally including in non-Islamic businesses. The Islamic microfinance model is designed to be compliant with Islamic law, the Shariah, which prohibits interest payments and fees, by way of the concepts of joint venture and profit sharing. This forum will also address current issues with microfinance, such as excessive interest rates, and examine ways Islamic microfinance can address these challenges to improve services for poor people.

About the Organizer: Located in Pakistan, the AlHuda Center of Islamic Banking and Economic (CIBE) is a nonprofit consulting firm that specializes in research and training in the Islamic microfinance industry. The organization also provides technical assistance in the area of Shariah law, organizes distance learning programs and publishes a monthly online magazine called “Islamic banking and finance news.” Akhuwat, a microfinance institution (MFI) based in Pakistan, was established in 2001. As of 2011, Akhuwat reports to the US-based nonprofit Microfinance Information Exchange (MIX) a gross loan portfolio of USD 2.8 million with approximately 31,500 active borrowers. This MFI does not accept deposits.
