Summary of Event:
This opportunity for rated African MFIs and microfinance investors to connect with each other is sponsored by AMT based on the idea that access to commercial funds is correlated with increased transparency of financial data. The event offers a series of sessions for MFIs and investors to interact, along with presentations on transparency and investments in the African microfinance sector. The agenda for this year’s event has not been yet been released, but previous years’ presenters included US-based nonprofits CGAP (Consultative Group to Assist the Poor), MFTransparency and the Microfinance Information Exchange (MIX).

Background on Organizer:
AMT was founded as a pilot program in 2000 by ADA (Appui au développement autonome) asbl, a Luxembourg-based nonprofit, with the aim of engaging a group of 13 MFIs and rating agencies in testing methods of conducting performance evaluations of African MFIs. Based on the results of the pilot program, the “African MFI Performance Evaluation Forum” was set up in 2003 as a discussion platform. The forum has since been formally institutionalized into the African Microfinance Transparency Forum and was registered as a legal entity in South Africa in 2008.
