Summary of Event: The aim of this symposium is to reflect on the inclusive finance sector and the role of regulators in monitoring and supporting its development outside the European Union. In addition to keynote speeches, “thematic sessions” will be held with the following titles: (1) “Regulatory frameworks for inclusive financial systems;” (2) “Regulation and innovation at the level of financial service providers”; (3) “The client perspective;” and (4) “The perspective of funders”[1].

The event will be linked to a workshop, which will cover microfinance regulation within the European Union. The workshop will be held under the auspices of the 1st European Microfinance Day on October 20, 2015, at the headquarters of the European Economic and Social Committee in Brussels, Belgium. The 1st European Microfinance Day is a joint event organized by the Microfinance Centre, the European Microfinance Network, the European Economic and Social Committee, and it is supported by the following affiliated organizations: the European Investment Fund, the European Investment Bank, the European Investment Bank Institute and the European Commission [3].

Background on Organizers: ADA, formerly known as Appui au Développement Autonome, is a nonprofit organization based in Luxembourg. ADA supports inclusive finance professionals in an effort to help the approximately 2.5 billion adults outside of the conventional financial system to reach their goals. ADA’s activities include developing new financial products, assisting in the capacity building of microfinance institutions (MFIs) and improving information on and awareness of microfinance activities. As of 2015, ADA has five focus areas: “green energy, jobs for young people, farm leasing, microinsurance and migrant savings”[3]. As of 2014, ADA reported total assets of EUR 3.7 million (USD 4.2 million). As of 2013, ADA had active projects in 23 countries and supported 150 MFIs serving approximately 5 million beneficiaries.
