Cost: Participation in the symposium and the exhibition is free of charge but prior registration is required.

Summary of Event: The aim of the symposium is to “critically reflect” on the work performed by ADA during it 20 years of operation. The theme of the event is “autonomy,” as ADA’s mission is to promote institutional autonomy for its partner organizations as they work to expand financial inclusion. In addition to keynote speeches, “thematic sessions” will be held with the following titles: (1) “The dimensions of institutional autonomy;” (2) “What kind of autonomy for microfinance?”; (3) “What governance for autonomy?” and (4) “The role of support organisations on the path to autonomy.” The symposium is followed by the opening ceremony of a photo exhibition entitled “Autonomy snapshot.” On the occasion of the opening ceremony, a debate on autonomy will be held between Mr Marc Bichler, diplomat and former Executive Secretary of United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF), and Mr Alpha Ouedraogo, former Director General of La Confédération des Institution Financières [The Confederation of Financial Institutions].

Background on Organizers: ADA, formerly known as Appui au Développement Autonome, is a nonprofit organization based in Luxembourg. ADA supports inclusive finance professionals in an effort to help the approximately 2.5 billion adults outside of the conventional financial system to reach their goals. ADA’s activities include developing new financial products, assisting in the capacity building of microfinance institutions (MFIs) and improving information on and awareness of microfinance activities. For 2012, ADA reported a budget of EUR 6.7 million (USD 8.4 million). More recent financials on ADA are not available. As of 2013, ADA supported 150 MFIs serving approximately 5 million beneficiaries.
