Cost: Admission is USD 10 for the general public, USD 5 for college students and free for currently-enrolled students of the University of Pennsylvania.

Summary of Event: The conference will cover how the model of microfinance has adapted to changing economic, social and cultural and business landscapes. It will include lectures on microfinance in high-income countries, gender in microfinance, for-profit microfinance and ethics, and the interaction of microfinance with technology. Elisabeth Rhyne, who served as vice president of US-based NGO Accion and who is also a co-creator of the Smart Campaign, which aims to protect microfinance clients from unscrupulous practices.

The conference will also feature the Penn Microfinance Case Competition, which is an initiative to solve operational problems of the Kasagana-Ka Development Center, a Philippine-based microfinance institution (MFI). The competition is open to undergraduate students from all universities.

Background on Organizer: Penn Microfinance is an undergraduate microfinance organization based at the University of Pennsylvania, a private institution of higher learning. It aims to connect students with field work with MFIs. Through the organization, students have worked with MFIs in Bangladesh, China, Ghana, India, Indonesia and several countries in Latin America. The organization also researches microfinance, seeking to raise its awareness.
