Summary of Event: The theme for the event is “Microfinance for Social Justice,” and it will feature presentations on topics such as the relationship between microfinance and aboriginal peoples; investment opportunities; mining; scale and sustainability, and women’s empowerment. There will also be a “micromarketplace,” during which microentrepreneurs and “social innovators” will present their work and products. The organizers of the event also offer a book-review blog, called “microbookclub,” which will feature “If I had a Water Buffalo: Microfinance as a Means to Sustainability” by Dr. Marilyn A. Fitzgerald.
About the Presenters: The keynote speakers are Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, KCMG [Knight Commander of the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George], the founder and chairman of BRAC (formerly known as Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee), an international development organization based in Bangladesh, and Mr Rupert Scofield, the co-founder, president and chief executive officer of FINCA International, a nonprofit organization headquartered in the US city of Washington DC.
